TechOps Welcome Letter
Greetings from the Technology Operations office (TechOps)!
I would like to welcome you to SERRC and introduce you a bit to our technology landscape. TechOps provides technical support, training, and service not just to SERRC staff but school districts. Consequently, we have a broad range of Alaskan educational technology knowledge and experience. Our computer network stretches from Juneau to Anchorage and into numerous school districts and across the Internet. We manage every flavor of computer, software, and network, and are highly-available to all SERRC staff. We not only manage the mission critical email, web, and file servers but we are here to help you with all your computing questions and needs.
So, without further adieu, here are some basics you'll want to be aware of:
Username & Password: Everyone gets their own, and these are supposed to be kept very private. The SERRC network is integrated, so your one password may work in numerous locations, on different computers, and for different things. Make sure you don't leave your computer logged-in when you aren't in front of it, and please memorize your password rather than keep a printed copy of it. Passwords can be changed by contacting TechOps.
Checking Email: Our email server has a web-browser interface (webmail) which allows you to check the contents of your mailbox from any computer on the Internet. The address for this is: http://serrc.org/mail. In addition to webmail we may have setup your computer with the Thunderbird email program. This is a standard email program allows you to send/recieve, and all that.
File Server: Our file server, known as StaffHost (also known as Host on Staff, or Host, or The Host), is available to you from any location. StaffHost provides secure file storage and sharing, so we encourage all staff to use it frequently, especially to store your important work documents and files. Information on connecting to StaffHost can be found on the SERRC Net.
Online Resources: We're continually improving and sharing our collection of agency resources, support documents, templates, tools, and guides. These are available to you through the SERRC Net. To get there, go to: http://serrc.net.
Getting Technical Support or Consulting: If you ever have questions or need technical assistance, and can't find your answer on serrc.net, just get in touch with TechOps either by emailing techops@serrc.org or calling 907.586.6806 and asking for "TechOps".
Welcome aboard, and happy computing!
