The Inside Scoop is a publication of The Learning Connection and SERRC - Alaska's Educational Resource Center and is distributed the first day of every month.

The Learning Connection provides free GED and Adult Education, Computer Training, Family Programs, and Job Assistance Programs at four locations throughout Juneau.

Please note that The Learning Connection’s monthly newsletter, The Inside Scoop, will go on hiatus for the summer but will resume again in the middle of August.

    TLC awards three scholarships to recent GED graduates.
    TLC’s downtown location announces its summer hours.
  2. Computer Training Update
    TLC’s free computer classes continue in June with “Introduction to Computer Concepts and Windows XP” and “Introduction to the Internet and E-mail.”
  3. Family Literacy Programs
    TLC@ Cedar Park and Gruening Park locations remain open until the end of June.
    Mount Roberts donates 30 tram passes to TLC.
  4. Job Assistance Programs
    JobX  - a new program that puts 16-24 year olds to work in subsidized work positions in Juneau – has placed more than 50 youth in jobs around the capital city.
    Alaska Vocational Institute’s Fall Semester slated to begin November 10th.
    Do you know someone 55 or older who needs new skills to obtain a job? The Mature Alaskans Seeking Skills Training (MASST)  program can help.
    The Youth Employment Services at SERRC (YESS!) helps 16-21 year olds achieve their employment and education goals.

  1. GED and Adult Education Update
    TLC awards three scholarships to recent GED graduates.
    With several recent GED graduates applying for multiple scholarships to both the University of Alaska Southeast and TLC’s Alaska Vocational Institute, TLC is proud to announce that Carly Rae Hulse and Tyler Papasodora were awarded scholarships to UAS and Veronica Lynn Stevens was the recipient of the Alaska Vocational Institute scholarship. Congratulations!!

    TLC’s downtown location announces its summer hours.
    Schools may be closing for the summer, but TLC’s downtown location stays
    open all year long. TLC is open five days a week with the following hours: 

    Mondays through Wednesdays 8-4:30
    Thursdays 8-7
    Fridays 8-3

  2. Computer Training Update
    TLC’s free computer classes continue in June with “Introduction to Computer Concepts and Windows XP” and “Introduction to the Internet and E-mail.”
    Funded through a City and Borough of Juneau Community Grant, TLC offers free beginning level computer classes. These classes are very popular and well-attended by a broad spectrum of Juneau residents.

    During the month of June, TLC will be offering “Introduction to Computer Concepts and Windows XP” on Monday and Wednesday evenings and “Introduction to the Internet and E-Mail” on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  All classes take place at The Learning Connection at 210 Ferry Way, from 5-7 pm.

    Family Programs
    TLC@ Cedar Park and Gruening Park locations remain open until the end of June.
    In the month of June, TLC@Cedar Park will serve adults Tuesdays through Thursdays from 10-1 and children from 1-4 on the same days. The center will close for the summer on June 26th. TLC@Gruening Park will be open Tuesdays through Thursdays the last two weeks of June.

    Mount Roberts donates 30 tram passes to TLC.
    Thanks to the generosity of George Reifenstein and the management team at Mount Roberts Tramway, TLC received 30 complimentary passes to distribute among its clients over the next few weeks. These passes are greatly appreciated and TLC is grateful for the donation from this local business.

  3. Job Assistance Programs
    JobX  - a new program that puts 16-24 year olds to work in subsidized work positions in Juneau – has placed more than 50 youth in jobs around the capital city.

    Funded by a Youth First Initiative grant, JobX has already placed more than 50 youth in career-oriented positions throughout Juneau.     Alaska Vocational Institute’s Fall Semester slated to begin November 10th.
    This past year, the Alaska Vocational Institute (AVI) graduated some 14 students - one of whom was hired by TLC’s parent company, SERRC – Alaska’s Educational Resource Center.     Do you know someone 55 or older who needs new skills to obtain a job? The Mature Alaskans Seeking Skills Training (MASST) program can help.
    MASST provides free job training that includes paid internships at work sites, job search assistance, and employment placement in Juneau and other communities throughout Southeast Alaska.

The Youth Employment Services at SERRC (YESS!) helps 16-21 year olds achieve their employment and educational goals.
YESS provides education, career exploration, work readiness, and job development for eligible Juneau youth 16-21 years of age.

5. Success Stories

The Juneau Construction Academy trained 32 adults in basic building industry skills during the Spring of 2008.  Alphonozo O’Neal Hampton took the welding class and is now working for Channel Construction on a project at the Greens Creek Mine on Admiralty Island.  Mike Hegna and Jason Catrett from the Alaska Ironworkers Local 751 taught the welding class.  Classes were also offered in Carpentry, Drywall, Plumbing, First Aide/CPR/AED, Scaffolding/Fall Protection, OSHA 10 and Forklift Safety. Congratulations Alphonozo!
