Lodging in Unalaska

The Grand Aleutian Hotel (800) 891-1194 http://www.grandaleutian.com/ I have had the pleasure of staying at the Grand Aleutian (locally known as the Grand Illusion). It is touted as being the furthest-most westerly 5 star hotel in the world. When I stayed there in the late nineties, the rooms were very nice and they had an excellent restaurant and bar/lounge (with a lounge singer on the weekends). If you get delayed here over a weekend (which can oftentimes happen in Dutch) try the Sunday Brunch. It is to die for.

If you can plan to stay at the Grand Aleutian over a Wednesday night, don't eat at all that day so you can pig out at the restaurant's all-you-can-eat seafood buffet dinner. It's pricey but it's a gorgeous spread straight from travel brochures of five star hotels. Reservations are suggested. It's definitely a must for big appetities. On the lighter side, Amelia's, which is within walking distance of the Grand, has a varied menu to include Mexican cuisine. Most of the seating is NOT smoke free so if that is your desire, choose to sit in the smaller, no smoking room to the right after entering. There are also two groceries nearby, both with some type of deli. Key Bank offers branch services and an ATM. There are two restaurants on the Unalaska side but transportation is required between Unalaska and Dutch Harbor. Unalaska has a very nice public library and community center. If the Grand Aleutian has no rooms, ask about staying at the Unisea Inn. It is down the road from the Grand and not quite as nice but one can't be too selective with no other housing options. If you ask for a non-smoking room, check it out first as most abodes have been exposed to cigarette smoke, some more than others. If you brought a cooler of food with you, the Grand will keep it in their kitchen refrigerator or freezer for you.
